Food was delicious, staff was excellent and good. Location: the hotel was not far from the towering cathedral, the centre of the town and the center of the old town. Also, we saw an ancient Roman arch, based just a pleasant stroll away from the venue.

La Porte Rouge is a really interesting old building, lovingly and carefully restored and right in the centre of Saintes. On arrival we changed to a double room which was large and airy and had a comfy bed and wonderful shower. All the rooms are a generous size, particularly the family room which is enormous. Breakfast was a delight with fresh pastries and homemade confiture and Monique and Jim are the most welcoming and generous of hosts.

Only the building
Not possible to reach, it was a crime to find the hotel and it is impossible to come to the hotel by car. An area where no cars are allowed. So with luggage a problem and a problem with the staircases. Breakfast room very dirty and not organised,, we never go back there

It was out of the ordinary - in a very old building - I imagine in the summer making use of the garden would be brilliant. It had comfortable beds, good bathroom facilities and James & Monique welcomed and looked after our dog, whilst we went out to eat at a lovely restaurant recommended by them. The homemade preserves with the breakfast were lovely, tho' my husband would have liked the chioce of fruit juice rather than the fresh fruit on offer.
Our private bathroom was down the corridor from the bedroom rather than ensuite - a bathrobe was supplied however. Also, despite downloading the directions, the fact that the hotel was on a narrow one way street, (especially when tired), made locating the hotel, dropping off bags and finding parking a little difficult on arrival - (it would be easier on a second visit).

It was an excellent location in the old town, easy to find because of the door! The hosts, Monique and James were very welcoming, helpful and spoke english. The building has been tastefully refurbished, the breakfast is traditional french and beautifully done and the shower was great!

We loved the old house, the owners were very friendly and gave us lots of local info. Within easy walk of most of the sights of Saintes and also good eateries. Bed was very comfy and the home made bread and jam along with freshly squeezed orange juice was great.

The king room had a work desk, coffee/tea making machines, and ironing facilities, plus the central location was a great advantage. Rewritten: Our room included a work desk, coffee/tea making machines, and ironing facilities, and being centrally located was a bonus.
